A Jewel of a book (2008-03-01)
This book is a jewel in the crown of the Wallflowers series, and it is the diamond. Lisa Kleypas, always such a wonderful historical writer, really achieves something with not only the series but this book in particular. I have been reading romance for the past 24 years, and this is one of my top 3 favorite romance novles of all time. And Lord Westcliff is second only to Mr. Darcy on my list of best heroes. Marcus is just……..perfect, especially in his imperfections.

There are similar notes in “It Happened One Autumn” to “Pride and Prejudice,” but they are rather more of a nod or a passing glance than an outright mimic. When Westcliff and Lillian meet (read Secrets of a Summer Night first — their first encounter is not to be missed!) they are immediately at odds, both pride and prejudice giving each the wrong impression of the other. And while both Westcliff and Lillian are very close to their siblings, and Lillian’s mother is another social climbing disaster, that is really where the similarities end. Lillian is rich, and yet a wallflower. Elizabeth is poor, yet popular. Though both do have “fine eyes.”

Darcy and Westcliff both become stiff-necked and pompus, but where Darcy broods alone, Westcliff is more of a social creature. Darcy is tall and of a slimmer build, where Westcliff is muscular and medium hight. Darcy is a romantic ideal, and Westcliff is just sexy as hell.

When Lillian and Westcliff get together, you feel it leaping off the page. And the thing about them that I loved the most was that Lillian could make Westcliff laugh, and he could make her feel loved for exactly who she is. It is so real, so believable a love that they make you just sigh in blissful reading happi-tude. Having met and been intrigued by Westcliff in two (I think it is just two) books previous to this one, I was waiting for his story, hoping he got a great romance, hoping that his turn wouldn’t disappoint me, and boy did I not have to worry. He got exactly the perfect love for him, and I’m so glad he and Lillian will be around for other books after this one. It is hard to let them go!

I could go on and on, but I don’t want you to keep reading what I’ve written. Buy this book and read what Kleypas has written. Better yet, get the whole Wallflower series in sequence (Daisy’s book is my least favorite, but that is like saying one piece of Godiva chocolate in the box is my least favorite) and read it. You, like me, will be savoring these chocolates for years to come. When exactly did they fall in love? (2007-12-03)
The story was OK. Marcus and Lillian were both strong, likable characters but since Lillian spent most of the book being courted by Lord St. Vincent and Westcliff spent most of the book avoiding or ignoring her I would love to know when they managed to fall in love with each other. They went from passionate hate and enmity to everlasting love. Not realistic at all. Not bad… just not realisticForget about reading them in order. Just read and enjoy. (2007-11-04)
As I’m sure you realize by now, this is the second in the “wallflower” series by Lisa Kleypas. I have not read the books in order, this one just came up as the one I chose when I closed my eyes and reached into the box. (I have so many books to read I should be ashamed of myself for buying more than I can read, but I’m not. Buying books is a compulsion for me. Some of my friends buy shoes, I buy books [and purses!] but we will just overlook that little purse thing. Purses are essential to life, right?)

Now, about this book. I am a fan of the writing of Lisa Kleypas. Some of her books I like more than others but I don’t think I’ve ever read one of her books which I would rate below a three. I thoroughly enjoy the “wallflower” concept. All four of the girls are completely different. They strike me as real, honest-to-goodness people. I like for an author to make me believe that I could meet their heroine and get to know her. Lillian Bowman is the daughter of a very wealthy American. She is a wallflower because of her unwillingness to control her tongue, bow and scrape to the English peerage and subjugate her intelligence in order to make a man feel superior. The only fault I found with Lillian was that she often carried her rebellious ways too far and got herself into needless trouble. But, and here is the point in Lillians favor, that turned out to be just exactly what Marcus, Lord Westcliff found so stimulating about her.

Marcus did NOT want to be attracted to Lillian. He did not want to consider marriage to any woman but Lillian should have been so far down his list as to be completely off the page. Yet, despite everything he tried to do, he could not resist watching her, and being intrigued by her. The whole “magic” perfume theme was O.K. for a while but I was glad when it began to take a backseat to the fact that Marcus couldn’t stay away from Lillian just because she was Lillian. Very, very satisfying for me.

I do recommend this book. I don’t think it matters one whit whether you read these books in order or not. This is my third one with only Daisy’s story to go. If I had to rank them right now, DEVIL IN WINTER is absolutely, totally, unequivocally first. Then Annabelle and Lillian have to fight it out for second. Who knows, Daisy just MIGHT move Evie out of first place but I don’t think so.…a thin line between love and hate (2007-09-24)
This is the second in the Wallflower quartet and in my opinion is much better than the first (Summer).

This is Lillian and Marcus’s story. I was intriqued to see what their story would be like after meeting them in Secrets of a Summer Night. Let me tell you, I wasn’t disappointed. Lillan is a real treat of a heroine. She swears, plays “baseball” with the boys, and has a temper on her. I loved it!

Marcus is a straight-laced, serious, by the book hero. Lillian storms in to his life and literally “rocks” his world. He does his very best to reason around why the two of them would never work, but is really is futile! Throughout the book we come to understand why Marcus is the way he is, and after meeting his hateful mother we only love Marcus even more.

The love scenes are scorching so be prepared!!! The end of the book features the Viscount St. Vincent and my only question is how I’ll ever be able to buy into him as the hero in the next book. He really does despicable things….I hope that the saying “Reformed rakes make the best husbands” rings true.

Enjoy It Happened One Autumn..it’s worth the read.American Girl takes on British Nobility (2007-09-11)
Lillian Bowman, an American heiress, is one of the four young women who call themselves the wallflowers. In this second installment of the series, headstrong, spirited Lillian, her sister Daisy and her parents are attending a month long party held at Lord Westman’s estate. Marcus, Lord Westman, is the ultimate in uptight, superior English snobbiness and Lillian cannot stand him. Lillian and her sister need a sponsor to help them gain a husband from the English nobility and that sponsor comes in the form of Marcus’s mother, a cold hearted woman who thinks preserving their bloodline is the most important thing her family can do. After sneaking out to cause some mischief, Lillian runs into Marcus who loses his head and kisses her passionately. Believing Marcus is bewitched by a secret ingredient in a perfume made just for her, Lillian enlists the other wallflowers to help in an experiment to see if the perfume has the same effect on all women. Soon Lillian discovers there is more to Marcus than the facade he presents to the public and she wishes more than anything that she can have him, but she knows he will never marry an American no matter how rich. Marcus is stunned to find himself so strongly affected by Miss Lillian Bowman, even in his affairs he has always been able to maintain a dignified presence but everytime he sees Lillian he loses all control….maybe even considering marriage.

This was an amusing, fast paced sweet romance and I have hopes that the last two stories will compare to the first two in the series. Marcus mother is the ultimate in cold hearted witches, and St. Vincent sufficiently wicked in his competition for Lillian. St. Vincent will be featured in Evie’s story which is the third and next book in this series.
