Jesus: the Missing Years! (2008-04-03)
This is one of my favorite books of all time! Yay Christopher Moore!

Anyone who has any interest in Christianity should find this book hilarious! Moore clearly knows his Christian and world history then and now. His treatment of Jesus and the people who worship him is outrageous and irreverent and strangely loving at the same time. I’m an athiest who went to Catholic school (I LOVED it) and while I don’t believe a word of it, have a great appreciation for all things Catholic, especially Catholic humor (the movie Dogma Dogma (Special Edition), the play Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You.Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All You and the Actor’s Nightmare: Two One-Act Plays) I also appreciate a big dose of skepticism, and this book delivers on all fronts. Moore is such a great writer that this is a PERFECT BOOK! This new Bible edition is sexy and great!Easily my all-time favorite book EVER :D (2008-03-15)
At first, I have to admit I was a bit put off by the look of this gift version of “Lamb” when first saw it at a Barnes and Noble while doing some window shopping. I’m not very religious now, but as someone who basically got ten years’ worth of Catholic dogma engrained into my DNA, well…the irreverence in the very look of this book made me worry just a little. I picked this book up and cracked it open to a random page, not expecting to see anything particularly interesting, and was pleasantly surprised when I ended up reading something that made me laugh. I ended up reading a few pages farther, and even though I hadn’t read the rest of the book, the stuff I did read was very funny and clever, and I knew I had to have this book. So…I bought it here instead because I wanted to save a few bucks. :P

This book is definitely worth reading. It’s irreverent, yes, and there’s a bit of coarse language sprinkled throughout the story. And there’s one gross (but funny) experience involving Biff, turnips and a toothless old Chinese woman. Despite that, however, I really don’t feel this book is disrespectful to Jesus or to Christianity at all. If anything, it pokes gentle fun at what Christians are taught to know about the Bible–you have to know your stuff, as a Christian, if you expect to understand all the references made to it in this book. But I don’t feel it makes fun of Christianity itself. So if you want a clever, funny, well-written book to read and you don’t mind laughing at least a little at what you’ve been taught over the years if you’re Christian, this book is for you. :) My favorite (2008-03-11)
I have read all of Christopher Moore’s books, and this one is right at the top of my list. I wouldn’t read this in a public place unless you like people staring at you for laughing out loud. Also, you might, depending on your personal beliefs, want to remember this is a fiction book, not one trying to pass for fact.he never ceases to amaze me (2008-02-08)
just when i think i cannot be surprised — i am. moore’s book is delightful. i plan on buying a few with the “bible” cover as gifts. i just need to get people past their “religion” in order to read it and i am sure they will love it; and it all makes sense.Lamb Special Gift Ed. (2008-01-23)
Book was in perfect condition. It was sent in a very timely manner and in timely fashion. Exactly as the seller described it.

We as consumers are brainwashed into thinking we need more to be of value. This book brought to light the many ways we devalue ourselves and our gifts. I appreciate that Ms. Twist has given the tools to reformat our thoughts on this critical subject. Willetta S BaCotePowerful! Very inspiring! (2007-01-31)

Expensive and Disappointing (2008-04-21)
This is a very thick and overpriced book. If you were looking for full frontal nudity, spend you money some place else. The photography is rather dark. And it is most annoying, that each one of the photos has the models with some grease on their bodies. What is that about ? Don’t waste your money. There are better books out there on the sporting male form (2008-04-21)
I just received this much-anticipated book, and overall, I am very disappointed with it. Though the men are indeed extremely rugged and handsome, the images are hardly racy or tantalizing; it’s clear the men were very uncomfortable with their nudity as most images have the men with their jeans pulled partially down their backside, and any frontal images have the genitals hidden behind shadows or hand-held towels. Strangely, there are several images spread over both pages, but the second page is completely blackened (for effect). Overall, the images are staight out of a men’s fitness magazine like Exercise for Men Only.

There are better books that portray the male form more vibrantly and sensually: the various Bondi books and the Dieux du Stade books - all which I highly recommend.

Don’t waste your money (2007-02-18)
If you’re looking for low-cost, you can start by not buying this book. It’s possibly the worst cookbook I’ve ever looked at.

The recipes are filled with errors. The nutrition information with each recipe is wildly inaccurate. Here’s an example: The Stromboli recipe (p. 238). It says it makes 4 3-ounce servings. It starts with a “1-lb. loaf of French bread.” Those of us who possess rudimentary math skills can see that that’s 4 ounces of bread per 3-ounce serving. And that’s before you add the ground beef, cheese and other ingredients. Furthermore, it claims each of the four servings will have 332 calories. I calculated it out and it’s going to be over 500 (more like 600) calories per serving.

This is typical of the recipes in this book. Another example: Beefy Mushroom and Barley Soup (p. 167). If you made this by the directions in the book, it would be inedible. It has “lean stew beef” as one of the ingredients. The total cooking time is 30 minutes. I hope you’re ready to chew for a LONG time.

Save your money and your time. Don’t buy this book.Disappointing (2007-02-12)
I found the structure of the book annoying - you constantly had to flip around to get menues and recipies and grocery lists, etc. Also, while the book description says it gives calorie amounts, it doesn’t break down where the calories come from, so if you want to make substitutions or swap meals from one day to another, you don’t know how that changes the calories.old standby (2007-02-07)
I am online searching for a replacement book, because mine is so dog-eared. I’ve had this book for years, and I always go back to it. A lot of these recipes are definitely old standbys for my family. There is some prep time involved with chopping onions, peppers, etc. Veggies are cheap and healthy; therefore, they’re in a lot of these recipes. Chop up a bunch at once and keep them in Baggies, ready for the next time. Not That Good (2007-01-12)
I had high hopes for this book and was sadly mistaken, the food is mediocre at best, the portions are very small, i would recommend purchasing “The 1200-calorie-A-Day Menu Coobook” by Nancy Hughes if you really want good food with good portions!! i have also checked out other books by Ms. Smith and I was equally disappointed. I hope you have better luck than me.Good book (2006-02-28)
Really good book. Good recipes. Needs a little color or pictures.

Sophie R (2008-03-03)
The most beautifully illustrated cookbook I’ve encountered. The recipes are perfect for families (i.e.picky eaters) and a great way to get kids to try new foods or combinations. For myself, a self-professed “foodie” I just love reading the recipes and the author’s comments. Great, yummy cookbook…a must get.such wonderful pictures-worth it for that alone… (2008-02-11)
and the recipes actually look really interesting, but i could just read it for the pics alone. the gray type is annoying but readable, not a deal breaker for me.Too bad it is difficult to read (2007-12-30)
This looks like a charming book with lovely pictures and memories. However, the recipes are so difficult to read in their light grey print that I keep putting the book down after attempting to browse it.Apples for Jam: A Colorful Cookbook (2007-12-12)
This book has great photos and recipes. However, the light gray print is difficult to read. It is a gift for my daughter and she is comfortable with the print and will enjoy using the book.Jim from Canada (2007-11-25)
‘Apples for Jam’ is a very different cookery book. There are many interesting little stories about how the author came to have the recipe and why she included it in the book. The recipes are great for all ages but especially for children. The recipes are made with healthy ingredients and attractive in appearance. If you want something different in your recipe book library this is the book for you.

Errors and Omissions Abound (2008-04-12)
Mr. McFarland’s premise is that a careful screen of a large universe of companies produces evidence of superior performance characteristics and therefore industry leading performance. It just so happens that as an industry veteran of commercial real estate it was much easier for me to see the complete inaccuracy of one of the case studies he constructs. A company he identifies as a Breakthrough Company , the Staubach Comapny, is an incomplete and outrageous portrayal of not only the subject company but also the comparison company. Roger Staubach is a superb leader, that is undisputed in the commercial real estate services industry. What the author does not tell you is that during the study period and the time his research takes place Staubach’s organization is actually a franchise. It only converted to a non-franchise model in late 2007. This is, for several reasons, an enormous omission in light of his description of the ownership structure of the company at that time. It is quite surprising as well that if you actually read the notes the sources the author points to related to the comparison company in this field are Crain’s New York as well as individuals he fails to identify. Mr. McFarland never spoke to the comparison company Studley nor did he apparently consult reliable industry sources for information on industry productivity. If Mr. McFarland or his research team actually looked at the websites of the companies he points to he could have found evidence that his theories about productivity required additional scrutiny as well as the negative toned description of the comparison company. What he and his research team would have found by performing simple mathematical equations is that the comparison company has per professional employee productivity of triple the Breakthrough Company he is featuring. In addition his portrayal of the comparison company Studley, Inc. is 90% inaccurate. His description of the current and past ownership are completely incorrect, the sources of the firm’s buisiness and the description of the firm’s founder could not be more inaccurate. The author has been contacted and in the face of being made aware of his errors has failed to take steps to correct them. The multitude of factual errors in this one case makes it questionable that the balance of the research and “Screens” have produced the results he proposes. His general idea is a good one, his execution is shockingly off base in this particular case erodes the credibility of the overall concept. If he is this wrong about one of the case studies he must be equally off course on the others.GREAT, GOOD & BAD (2008-03-16)
GREAT; as a betting man myself, i loved Chapter 4 ‘Upping the Ante’. It covers the psychology of betting, why gambling gives betting a bad name and physics of bets, types of bets (i.e. market bets, process bets) and the art of linking bets together to build reald advantage over your competitors.

GOOD; The author chose companies from the Inc 500 list in order to analyze the key features of success, i.e. becoming a breakthrough company. Here the author chose well since most of the books concentrate either on very small companies or very large companies while neglecting the Inc 500.

BAD; Examples of successful companies/case studies suffer from two BIG problems. One, the selection problem. Do you want to find a business case where betting big and capturing market share, despite losing money was successful? Sure, no problem. We can find causes to support our theory. Do you want to find a business case where betting big and capturing market share while losing money leads to failure? Again, we can find it. No matter what business philosophy, we can select companies supporting our theory. Two, the attribution problem. What we attribute success may not be correct at all. The very same attribute might lead to failure in an another company.

If you enjoy case studies, this might me a good read for you. I don’t. Chapter 4 on betting saved the book my four star rating.Rudimentary and lacking (2008-03-15)
An oversimplification of the multitude of factors that determine success.

interestingly, one of the author’s predominant case studies is Polaris, which, according to the author is a good example of a breakthrough company. They built a new product and entered into a bigger and emerging market. Not exactly a revolutionary concept. In you start to think that this might be a good example to follow then you should look at the value of their share value over time. Considering this book is published in 2008, if you were to have bought shares in Polaris in 2005 you would now have lost 50% of your money by 2008. Not a great example of a “sustainable growth” company. It would appear there are flaws in the research methodology.A True Differentiator (2008-03-02)
Keith is a man who can tell a story. Unlike other books which seem to lecture, The Breakthrough Company moves with the ease of an easy tale. Keith paints pictures and uses concrete examples which put one in the shoes of the entrepreneur and make us empathetic to their challanges.

An interesting and wonderful read. You will find yourself paraphrasing or quoting from this book in the future.Going to the next level (2008-02-24)
The book gives very detailed information on how and when to get to the next level in your bunines. A lot of good links for your information gathering process.

Customer Reviews:
Are these people organized or what? (2007-10-12)

This is not a directory of parks where you can take your RV. Nor is it a road guide to every stop in the U.S. with details of what to see and where to sleep. It is a combination of a how-to-do-it guide and a personal journal of a trip. And it is incredibly useful in the planning of the trip. As a completely disorganized person I admire the highly tuned organization that went into this trip.

When you come down to it, this book could be used by a couple going on an extended automobile trip as well as an RV. All those questions that come up: what to do about mail and bills (especially unexpected ones). Who watches the house or do you rent it out? What happens if there is an accident–either to the vehicle or to the occupants? How do you deal with an emergency at home? (I had no idea it was so easy to simply park your RV in a motel parking lot and take a plane home if need be). And of course–how do you keep out of each other’s hair?

You do get to know the Whites personally through the book. They are obviously good sports. No whining when Carol breaks her ankle. The trip goes on and she hobbles up and down the terrain. They are defintely the poster couple for active retirement–trudging through national parks, rafting down the white water, golfing when they come upon a welcoming green. They are not only active they are obviously well-to-do and are able to stay in motels and eat at the better restaurants when they desire.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have their stamina or their yearly income. What they have outlined is a very usable roadmap for taking the year off and traveling while still keeping in touch with family, friends and finances. They have also worked up a budget for a more frugal journey (around $44,000 rather than $78,000).

I mention this book in my newly published “Crafting the Travel Guidebook”, because I consider it an excellent example of the double category book. It also happens to be a good read!

Road Trip??? (2007-10-05)
These two authors basically drive around the country and pour out verbal diahrea on boring facts about their trip that no one in their right mind should care about. They are actually proud of the fact that they only???? spent 80k in one year of travelling. They must have lived like anaimals! Also, Carol seems to use the exclamation point way too excessively in her writing! If you are not retired and are somewhat of a young age please avoid this book. I did give it one star because if you have a good sense of humour you might enjoy her little stories! For me, more of a 3 1/2 star book but since halves are not an option, 4 stars. (2007-10-03)
The first chapters of this book provide excellent guidance for planning a one-year trip away from home. The authors guide you through the entire process of planning and preparation. Definitely four star information. The authors purchased a small RV, set up their budget, rented out their house and got ready to go. This book shares what worked for them and walks you through all the necessary steps that need to be accomplished prior to your departure including a planned/actual budget and a more frugal version. Both budgets seemed high to me, but if the trip were made today, both might be a real bargin.

The second portion of the book, a journal of their year on the road, seemed sketchy and a bit disjointed. There isn’t a lot of information on any of the areas visited, so not as useful as it might of been for some actual travel planning. They spent so many nights at hotels that I’m not sure the motor home was a good investment, but the authors thought it was.

If you are considering traveling away from home for an extended period of time, you will find this book a helpful addition to your library along with one or two good travel guides. If, however, you are more interested in reading about traveling the USA in a small RV, Barbara Thacker’s books, while older, are fun armchair travel reading along with Ron and Barb Hofmeister’s books on full timing in a much larger RV.Entertaining and loaded with great info (2007-08-26)
This is a very entertaining book loaded with great information about extended traveling. Be it just a few weeks or a year or more, the authors have dispensed great ideas on how to handle the everyday life you leave behind (for whatever period of time).

I finished the book in about a week, reading it for it’s entertainment value. I will be retiring soon and my wife and I plan on taking extended “vacations” in our RV. I will read the book again (and again) so I can garner as much information as I can.listen to the voices of first-hand experience (2007-07-19)
Phil and Carol White amply demonstrate that anyone can live “a road trip dream” as they thoughtfully share their proven insider tips for enjoyable RV travels. Interesting to discover, according to the authors, that a big mistake first-timers make is overplanning. Read this book and “just do it!”

Absolutely the Best (2001-04-06)
I have only been doing this program for a little while, and it is as great as everyone says it is. Someone earlier said it is great for 16-45 year olds, but Im about to turn 15 and it works great for me. It would also work great for someone over 45, as their are at leat 10 different exercises for each body part to choose from. I suggest you stop whatever program you may be doing right now and try this one, I have looked into numerous other programs and attended camps and this is by far the best program I’ve found do far.Year round training (2001-02-12)
I’m a woman in training for the IWFL (yes, there is women’s football; check out californiaquakefootball.com.) This book has helped my training immensely. It covers just about everything. All lifts are expressed as a percentage of your maximum single-repetition weight (e.g., 8 x 60%)–which means I can use it as easily as the big boys. Bring a calculator to the gym, or else sit down and figure out the numbers beforehand, unless you are one of those people that can instantly calculate 60% of 130 to the nearest 5… well, you get the idea…

Buy this book & be bigger, stronger, faster. What else do you want?Phenomenal (2001-01-20)
This book provides a great training plan for players aged 16 to 45. Very comprehensive, easy to use and well illustrated. Noticed results within 6 weeks. Includes not only weight and conditioning training, but also drills to improve agility, foot speed and balance. This reference can serve as the basis for designing a team or individual training program for any level of play. Are You Ready? (2000-07-31)
Listen. This book is it. Drop any program you are on and follow this book. It involves everything from weight training to proper conditioning and even adds plyometrics for the complete combination of power, strenght, speed, agility, and stamina. I’ve never gained more mass and strength in one year in my entire life. This tells you exactly what to do and when to do it. This is so intense I recommend finding a mentor or a lifting partner to follow this with you to keep motivated. If football is your life like it is mine, buy this and you will become a better athlete. Period. This One’s All That (2000-01-21)
Man, I can tell you, if you what a complete workout plan, this one’s all that and more. Especially the first two weeks of the off-season, resistance training workouts, if you go maximally through those workouts like Ben Cook describes, you are going to be left at the end having to have some one else take your shirt off. I mean you are all messed up, but in a good way. This book was exactly what I needed. I’m on week 7 right now, (I started at the end of my high school football season) and I already feel bigger and stronger. Mr. Cook says that consistency is the key, and so far I havn’t missed a workout. It seems to really be paying off I think. It’ll pay off for you too I’ll bet. GET THIS BOOK!

Madness of Mary Lincoln (2008-04-12)
This was an incredibly well researched work. New material gave the feeling that the reader was part of the rollercoaster life of Mary Lincoln.Poor excuse for scholarship (2008-04-03)
This is one of the weakest books I have ever read on either of the Lincolns, and comes across largely as a toss-off result of his research on Robert T. Lincoln and his unbelievable (and seemingly wasted) discovery of previously unknown MTL letters. Emerson completely ignores the vast scholarship on Abraham Lincoln’s own mental illness, citing the exceptional work “Lincoln’s Melancholy,” but mentions nothing of his own severe depression. He completely dismisses the well-documented historical fact of women being committed to institutions against their will or need, particularly after being widowed, and there is no gender analysis of the public or medical response to Mary Lincoln’s erratic behavior. And even if she were, as Emerson claims, suffering from bipolar disorder, that hardly qualified her as “insane” or requiring hospitalization. Few women could have suffered as many tragic losses as she did - not the least of which was having her husband murdered as he sat beside her - and withstood it with complete strength and equanimity.

Worst of all seems to be the zero-sum value judgment Emerson seems to need to draw in order to redeem the negative reputation of R.T. Lincoln as a son - there is no nuance in either character’s behavior; M.T. Lincoln is completely nuts and therefore malicious, while R.T. Lincoln is the perfect understanding son trying to do what is best for his mother. Good history rarely ignores so many valuable sources or lacks any degree of nuance. This book unfortunately does both.Insight into this figure’s troubles (2008-02-22)
I found this book to lend key insight into the troubled mind of an often-misunderstood woman. I also found her relationship with Abraham Lincoln to be anything but “normal.” She was actually his second choice among her own sisters, and it appears theirs was a relationship fraught with extreme highs and lows, not always attributable solely to her flaws.

Initially a tad (no pun intended) eccentric, the horrors she experienced ultimately served to unravel her. Seeing her husband and children die before her very eyes was simply too much, leading to her confinement in a “home,” by her loving son Thomas. As is frequently the case in these matters, she felt that Thomas, a good and worthy man, had betrayed her and spent the remainder of her days vilifying him.

The writing is clear, though a bit plodding at times. An historian’s fascination with minutiae sometimes clouds the narrative flow, particularly for the casual reader.

Nevertheless, there is much to learn here, and much to recommend this woman’s sad tale.Retrospective diagnosis (2008-01-15)
I should say first that my own works on Mary Lincoln were generously referenced by Jason Emerson, with whom I had some correspondence as he prepared his book. My article, “Mary Lincoln’s Final Illness: A Medical and Historical Reappraisal” (with co-author the late Robert Feldman, a neurologist)was published in the Journal of the History of Medicine,1999, volume 54, 511-542; also “Mary Lincoln’s ‘Suicide’ Attempt: A Physician Reconsiders the Evidence”, published in the Lincoln Herald, 2003. I can make both articles available if you write to me at bertzpoet@yahoo.com.

Feldman and I show quite substantially that Mary Todd Lincoln suffered from a spinal cord degeneration called tabes dorsalis, and that the physicians who examined her in 1882 (commissioned to do so by Congress as it considered her plea for a pension) were experts in that disease. The signs and symptoms of that physical illness were the major pieces of ‘evidence’ to impute insanity at her trial. As for her delusional state in the run-up to the trial and just after, it is clear that this was a post-traumatic stress reaction to the 10th anniversary of her husband’s murder — it was not the first time that she had other, less severe, ‘anniversary’ reactions, something she herself recognized.

Although the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder is interesting, given her high strung and volatile personality with a mania for shopping, it can only be conjecture. Curiously enough with only four months of being in the asylum (truly a rest home for her, no medications or constraint,)in the years following, she showed no more classic manifestations of Bipolar Disorder; in fact, rather mellowed and reconciled with her son.

Emerson’s book is splendidly written and a fine contribution to the field of Lincoln studies.

Norbert Hirschhorn MDHardly ‘Historical’ (2007-12-17)
My suggestion to people interested in the life of Mary Todd Lincoln is to read all available related material, including Jason Emerson’s book, and think critically as you do. I think it would be especially unwise to naively accept this book “The Madness of Mary Lincoln” as a true account of her life. While any reader will appreciate the copies of letters of correspondence between Mary Todd Lincoln and other important historical figures in this book’s appendix, I believe that readers will be and should be critical of the author’s work. This book consists of many contradictions (often within the same paragraph), a parochial attitude (not unlike many of the 19th century individuals being discussed), several assumptions, and too many unsupported arguments. Overall, my rating of “The Madness of Mary Lincoln” is low, because as an anthropologist I believe the author was overtly subjective under the pretence of being unbiased and I found this troubling. The author’s language says it all– from the beginning . . . The “Madness” of Mary Lincoln (emphasis mine). In Emerson’s epilogue he emphasizes that it is harmful to dichotomize these historical individuals as either villains or heroes and it is equally unwise to consider any story without it’s historical context. I agree with him and am astonished that he did not follow his own advice in this book. Customer Reviews:
Helpful Book, Bad Consulting Service (2006-01-06)
This book was useful in BEGINNING a search of schools which would provide the education I was seeking via the internet. I had to do lengthy and extensive follow-up/research based on the information provided in this text. One word of caution, an offer is made for “consulting services” (for a fee) to assist the reader with their search. I was most dissapointed by this service. The information provided was not individualized based on my responses to their questionnaire and request for further assistance (as was offered) was ignored.
